Letter No 48
He sailed from Callao [Peru] on 3 Mar, and reached Guayaquil 12 Mar; he was surprised to find that the letters with arrangements of his money affairs have not yet arrived; if they are sent to Guatemala, it may take several months for them to arrive; the letters should be sent to Panama, from where schooners take correspondence to different ports, 'until the steam navigation is regulated'; he sent a letter from Lima [Peru] via Mr John Maclean [unidentified], who was returning to England, along with a parcel of seeds with three species of Convolvulus and a copy of the list of his Guatemala collections; he sent another parcel 25 Feb with six kinds of seeds, two species of Oxalis and two bulbs, on the Bonanza to Liverpool, addressed to the care of Messrs Gibbs, Bright & Co [merchants in Bristol and Liverpool]; he collected these from the cordillera [mountains] in Peru, which he visited with Mr Pflucker [Charles Pflucker, German merchant in Peru], 'one of the partners of the house of Messrs Gibbs, Crawley & Co [merchants in Lima]'; he will continue his journey to Cuenca [Ecuador] and then to Loxa [Loja, Ecuador] as soon as he has received his letters of introduction, and hopes that the 'disturbances, which have broken out in Pasto [Colombia]' will have been settled [?the so-called War of the Supremes, a civil war in the Republic of New Granada, later named Colombia, 1839-1841]; Mr Cope, the British consul [Walter Cope, British consul in in Ecuador] is expected to arrive from Quito [Ecuador], and he hopes to receive assistance from him
Hartweg's accounts for 17 Nov 1840-16 Mar 1841 include '67 days' allowance' $112, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $7.4, 'freight of 1 cargo of luggage from Guatemala to Acajutla' $10, 'passage from Acajutla to Conchagua' $10 and 'thence to Callao [Peru]' $150 [here the list includes 4 more items], and 'received in cash' $100 'by sale of 2 horses & 1 mule with saddles &c'
