He has been 'doing little' due to the rainy season; he and his servant got 'wet to the skin' on one occasion, and were taken ill with ague, 'but fortunately every other day, so that we could assist each other', and have now both recovered, 'with a timely application of some of the contents of the little medicine chest'; he will send in a few days some of the epiphytes from Vera Paz [Alta Verapaz Department, Guatemala] and cones of a new species of pine, similar to those sent from Angangueo [Mexico]; the herbarium is progressing slowly, but he hopes the rains will change that; one of the mules became sick, and he had to send it to be cured at a stable, but it died
Hartweg's accounts for 17 May-16 Jun 1840 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $10, 'keeping of beasts' $10.5 and 'two halters for horses' $1.4, and 'received in cash' $50 from Messrs de Aycinena [Pedro & Ignacio de Aycinena, merchants in Guatemala]
