Letter No 26'
He received a letter from Mr Edgar [Thomas Edgar, treasurer of the Horticultural Society of London], dated 15 Nov, telling him about arrangements made with the Guatemala agent in London; the dispatches from the Council of the Society have not yet arrived, but as soon as he receives the instructions he will proceed according to them; he has found some 'very interesting' plants, including a 'splendid' Caprifolium, Mahonia, a species of Daphne, a fifth species of Garrya ('but no flowers or seeds'), Lonicera and Fuchsia; he collected 24 species of epiphytes, including three or four new species, a few seeds of 'the true' Convolvulus jalapa [Ipomoea jalapa], a shrubby Lopezia, a yellow flowering Cobaea, two varieties or species of Pinus occidentalis and some cacti on an excursion to tierra caliente [region with a tropical climate], about 25 leagues [75 miles] away; he will soon begin packing; he will leave his boxes with Messrs Byrns & Co [Messrs Byrns, Hooton & Co, merchants in Mexico] before continuing to Angangueo [Mexico] to collect pine seeds
Hartweg's accounts for 16 Dec 1838-16 Jan 1839 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $18 and 'keeping of 3 beasts' $16.5 and 'shoeing' $1.4, and 'received in cash' $200 from Real del Monte Company [British mining company in Mexico].
