They have been here since Friday [11 Jan] but are about to leave now, and his instruments are being re-embarked; he spent seven hours ashore, and asks that Joseph tell Mr Murdoch [?Thomas Murdoch, fellow of the Royal Society] that in one day they went by the Jardim das Freiras [residence of Henry Veitch, British consul in Madeira] into the Curral [das Freiras], ascended the Pico Ruivo, and returned to Funchal [Madeira], to show him that they have 'not spared exertion'; the last five miles were ascended on foot as the roads were impassable to mules due to breaches, and for the last three miles there were above two feet of snow; he will share his observations once he has the time during their passage to Sierra Leone to dissect and calculate them; they will not stop at Tenerife; Don [George Don] was 'highly gratified' in their excursion; the scenery is very fine, and particularly interesting to him as he had never seen mountain scenery before; Don has a cabin and men to accompany him; his instruments are to his satisfaction; he has met exceeding attention here from everyone, but especially Mr Blackburne [Henry Blackburn, British merchant in Madeira] and Veitch.
