They have had constant gales, and have headed back to Torbay until the winds improve; he asks Joseph to write to him; he gets on well with the commodore, but misses Captain Parry's [William Edward Parry, arctic explorer; Sabine accompanied Parry on his 1819 expedition] 'warm friendship and interest' in his pursuits; the officers are attentive to him; the enclosed letters will tell Joseph of the steps Edward has taken on Mr Don's [George Don] account, and he is sure that Mends [Robert Mends, captain of HMS Iphigenia] will do his duty to Don now, as he was taken aback by Edward's letter and very glad to get out of the scrape by conceding; he too has had a 'skirmish' with Robert Mends, who is extremely stingy; 'I never lived so badly as I do at his table […] but that signifies little to me and I am glad that by so easy a mode as being contented by my fare I can please him'; he writes quickly so as not to lose the view of the coast, but will write again; he is quite well; Mends just told him that he shall head straight to Falmouth, but Joseph is to direct letters to Torbay as the Post Office will forward the letters; they go tomorrow morning to Teignmouth where Mends has a daughter
