Scope & content
He acknowledges receipt of 'various letters up to No 8', including one dated 18 Jun; the Helen Stewart arrived with boxes 19-22, although some of the plants were dead or in bad condition due to lack of water from condensation on the glass, as cotton was employed to keep the plants in place; boxes for Sir George Larpent [British merchant] and Mr Hill [unidentified] arrived in a good condition; he must not rely on azaleas arriving this coming winter; he encloses letters from Lord Derby [Edward Smith-Stanley, earl of Derby, British secretary of state for war and the colonies] and Mr Bentham [George Bentham, secretary of the Horticultural Society of London] [enclosures not present]; Donald [?Donald Munro, gardener at the Horticultural Society garden at Chiswick, London], who was sent to examine the plants, suggests the cotton did no harm
Enclosed is a note from George Gordon [gardener at the Horticultural Society garden at Chiswick, London] relating to the soil in box 22 containing peonies; the box was in good order, but that the plants, being 'small and worked ones', made no more roots on the voyage and subsequently 'became exhausted and died'
