He acknowledges receipt of Lindley's letter dated 13 Feb on behalf of Lord Stanley [Edward Smith-Stanley, earl of Derby, British secretary of state for war and the colonies], who will be happy to provide the requested letters of introduction for Robert Fortune; Lord Stanley hopes that there will be no necessity for military expeditions into the interior of China, 'as you allude to', but would recommend taking advantage of the 'present occupation of Chusan [Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China] and Goo-long-soo [Gulangyu, Fujian, China] by the British authorities for the purposes of collection and investigation in natural history, before those places are restored to the Chinese government'
