He encloses an extract of a letter from Hong Kong dated 23 Sep 1842, which 'may interest you'
Enclosed is 'Copy of a letter from Mr Fortune [Robert Fortune] dated Hong Kong 23 Sept 1842'. The top part of the letter has been cut off
He has succeeded in growing 'a great many useful plants here already', introduced by him from Europe, including vine, fig, chestnut, almond and tamarind [here the list includes 5 more plants]; he brought from Canton [Guangzhou, Guangdong, China] and Macao [Macau] whampee [wampee], carambola and oranges; all these plants can be hardened by planting them on the hills at a high altitude, and can be sent to New South Wales [Australia], New Zealand, and eventually to Europe
