Henry Steward (1817-1876) made his living as a comb manufacturer (Steward & Son), but took a keen interest in horticulture. In his early twenties he joined the committee of the Ancient Society of York Florists, becoming its secretary and chairman in due course. He was also involved in the National Tulip Society, and the National Carnation and Picotee Society. He was elected to the city council in 1868, and became successively sheriff, alderman, and Mayor of York. He helped to run the York Horticultural Gala, becoming its chairman in 1869..
