Enclosed with the carte de visite is a piece of paper with the inscription 'Yours very sincerely Edward Sheppard'; the signature of Edward Sheppard. Edward Sheppard (1816-1883) was an entomologist who specialised in coleoptera. He was later a Collector of Customs in the port of London.
