John Thorpe (1842-1909) was born in Leicestershire, and was part of the nursery firm Bell & Thorpe. In 1874 he went to America, where he became a well-known horticulturalist, and became known as 'Uncle John'. He was the first president of The Society of American Florists, and the superintendent of the Department of Horticulture at the World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, in 1893..
