He came from a family of nurserymen, specialising in Camellias, Azaleas, and palms. He was co-editor of 'L'Illustration Horticole'. Later he became a consultant to King Leopold II, for his hothouses of Laeken. He was vice-president of the Royal Society for Agriculture and Botany of Ghent..
