Black and white 3/4 seated portrait of Eduard August von Regel. Ink Pencil inscription on verso, 'Dr Regel'. Eduard August von Regel (1815-1892) was a German horticulturalist and botanist. He trained in the botanic gardens at Bonn and Berlin, and in 1842 he became head of the Old Botanic Garden in Zurich. In 1852 he founded, and for a long period edited, the magazine Gartenflora. In 1855 he moved to St Petersburg to work at the Imperial Botanical Garden, where he became Director in 1875.
