Charles Valentine Riley (1843-1895) was a British-born American entomologist who pioneered the use of pest-control. In 1868 he became the first State Entomologist for Missouri, and later became entomologist to the US Department of Agriculture, and curator of insects at the Smithsonian Institution. He edited 'Insect Life' and 'The American Entomologist'. He was among the founders of the American Association of Economic Entomologists. He was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1884..
