Charles Lawson (1794-1873) was a nurseryman at the family seed merchants Peter Lawson & Son, in Edinburgh . He raised the Lawson's Cypress Seed (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) which was sent from the Sacramento River in 1854. He was Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1862 to 1865
