Scope & content
Black and white engraved plate depicting Burghley-House [Lincolnshire] with trees, grazing cows and deer in the foreground. The house was conceived by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, between 1555 and 1587. The gardens were landscaped by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown at the behest of the 9th Earl, who had inherited in 1754. The book plate bears the imprints 'Publish'd as the Act directs, May 1st. 1782, by W.Watts, Chelsea', 'A.Devis del' and 'W.Watts sculp'. From the book 'The seats of the nobility and gentry' by William Watts
