The estate passed to the Leghs of Lyme by marriage in 1388, and remained in the family until 1946 when it was given to the National Trust. In its heyday, it was a great sporting estate. The engraving shows the house in the background with two figures strolling in front of the house. In the foreground, figures can be seen fishing on the bank of the lake and in a boat on the lake. The book plate bears the imprints 'Publish'd as the Act directs Jan.y 1st. 1786, by W.Watts, Chelsea', 'C. Nates, del' and 'W.Watts, Sculp'. From the book 'The seats of the nobility and gentry' by William Watts
