The inscription beneath the painted oblong calabash translates as: 'Oblong Calabasse reduced to a quarter of its size / from the garden in Monsieur Carton de Wÿnezeele in Hooghe near Ypres ao. 1818 painted by Mr Seraphin Vermote [Seraphin Francois Vermote]. In 1816, he was commissioned by Charles Carton de Winnezeele to decorate his castle 't Hooghe in Zillebeke.
