Scope & content
Coloured engraved plate depicting [Painshill] in Cobham, Surrey. An ornamental bridge joins the island to the mainland, with trees lining the bank. Charles Hamilton acquired the land at Painshill in 1737 and proceeded to transform the grounds into a 'pleasure garden' based on his experiences during a Grand Tour across Europe. Financial difficulties and debt forced him to sell the estate in 1773, when he moved to Bath. The book plate bears the imprints 'Wollet delt', 'Wm. Wise sculpt' and 'Pubd. Jany.1.1798'. From the book 'Observations on modern gardening' by Thomas Whately
