Coloured engraved plate depicting the garden at [Esher Place] in Surrey. The house can be seen to the left of the engraving, with a river and ornamental bridge to the right. The estate passed into the ownership of Henry Pelham in 1729, who hired William Kent to renovate the property. Kent was an architect, landscape architect, painter and furniture designer. He introduced the Palladian style of architecture into England and originated the 'English landscape garden' style of design. The book plate bears the imprint 'W. Woollet delt.', 'Pubd.March.1798' and 'I.Walker sculpt'. From the book 'Observations on modern gardening' by Thomas Whately
