Royal Signature Paintings

The RHS has long tradition exists of commissioning a beautiful floral artwork from a significant botanical artist, signed by our royal patron.

Queen Charlotte became our first patron, over 200 years ago, in 1816. Since then, a further 41 decorative ‘Royal Signatures’ have been created. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were enthusiastic supporters, and persuaded members of their extended family and the European monarchy to join as honorary members.

In many of the paintings, the artist depicted flowers and plants that were associated with the patrons’ family, country or horticultural interests.
