James Sowerby: Coloured figures of English fungi or mushrooms
James Sowerby (1757-1822) was a renowned naturalist and talented artist and engraver, who ranked as one of the most prolific natural history illustrators of his time. In his book Coloured figures of English fungi or mushrooms, Sowerby produced each of the striking and meticulously detailed plates, accompanied by insightful and practical printed descriptions. Issued in parts from 1795-1815, Sowerby hoped the volumes would promote greater understanding of fungi and encourage the cultivation and safe use of a wider range of species.
