Gooseberry growers' registers
Competitive gooseberry growing was a hugely popular pastime amongst the working classes of nineteenth-century northern England. Gooseberry growers gathered in the public houses and inns of Lancashire, Cheshire and the Midlands, to present their prized fruits. Their gooseberries were judged on their size, and were weighed on apothecary's scales.
The gooseberry registers are a record of these meetings, and feature over 700 different gooseberry varieties.
