Plants for Purpose Herbarium Specimens
The Plants for Purpose project is a multi-year programme of research, collection and creation of digital tools.
The 1851 Royal Commission Herbarium collection is the critical foundation for the information and research needed to build a comprehensive collection and science-based database. These support the online services and education packages needed to deliver plant-based solutions to the big issues our planet faces – climate change, biodiversity loss and increased urbanisation.
RHS scientific research has found that the impact of these challenges can be reduced, mitigated or supported by planting the right plant in the right place for the right purpose.
Below you can find links to collections created to highlight specimens gathered for their environmental benefits. If you would like more information about our research, please visit the RHS Science web pages.
